The area around the blocked coronary artery is stabilized while the surgeon grafts the blood vessel on the pumping heart. The much lower post operative morbidity with the offpump operation is established. An “offpump CABG” is a CABG performed without the use of a heartlung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass). This means the heart continues to provide blood to the rest of the body during the surgery.
