Voluven® – The most widely used synthetic colloid. 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 in 0,9% sodium chloride solution. Derived from waxy maize starch. Isooncotic solution – suitable for volume replacement. Provides both initial and mediumterm volume effects (46 h). Voluven® is indicated for treatment of hypovolemia due to acute blood loss when crystalloids alone are not considered sufficient. Hypovolemia is associated with disturbances in macro and microcirculation. Macro and microcirculation disturbances give rise to diminished organ blood flow and decreased oxygen supply to various organs, and finally to functional organ failure.
