When Patients are immobilised in bed or our mobility is restricted, the calf muscle pump, which makes a significant contribution to pumping venous blood back to the heart, is switched off. Medical thrombosis prophylaxis stockings exert pressure (compression) on the superficial veins in the legs. They have a pressure gradient that decreases from the heel to the thigh. The blood can thus then flow back to the heart more quickly through the veins with smaller diameters. This can effectively prevent pooling of the blood in the veins and dangerous blood clots (thromboses).
